Why breathing out slowly is the hard part
When kids get overwhelmed, their breathing goes fast and shallow before anyone notices, including them. "Take a deep breath" is good advice that almost never works in the moment, because a big breath in is easy and a long breath out is the part that actually helps. Asking a dysregulated child to count to eight is asking a lot.
